Dive Into Another Side of Key West 🤿🐠
Some of Key West’s greatest scenery isn’t on the island at all. It’s beneath the water.
The Florida Keys are home to the Florida Reef Tract, the only living coral barrier reef system in the continental United States and one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world. Just offshore, warm turquoise water reveals coral formations, tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, shipwrecks and an entirely different side of the Keys.
Whether you’re an experienced diver or your idea of snorkeling is “mask on, face down, try not to drink the ocean,” there’s an adventure for you.
Grab a mask. Jump in. Things are about to get colorful. 🦜🤿
Tipsy Says: Some of the best bars in Key West are underwater. Coral bars, that is.
🦜 Tipsy’s Guide to Getting Under the Rock
Diving, Snorkeling & Exploring Key West Below the Surface
Key West is sitting beside the Florida Keys coral reef system, with shallow reefs for first-time snorkelers, deeper reef dives, artificial wrecks and even expeditions all the way to the Dry Tortugas. Local dive sites include Sand Key, Western Sambo, Eastern Dry Rocks and famous wrecks such as the Vandenberg.
Whether you're a certified diver or you've never put your face underwater without holding your nose, there's a trip for you.
🐠 Classic Reef Snorkeling

This is where I'd steer most Tipsy Parrot guests who simply say, “We want to go snorkeling.”

One of the big names in Key West snorkeling. Fury operates spacious catamaran trips out to the coral reef, including a three-hour morning snorkel. Gear and instruction are included, making this an easy choice for beginners and families.

A nice bridge between snorkeling and serious diving. Lost Reef runs reef snorkeling as well as scuba trips and has more than 40 years of local experience. It's a PADI 5-Star Dive Center located at Key West Bight Marina.
🦜 TIPSY SAYS: No certification required. Just remember which end of the snorkel goes above the water.
🐬 Snorkeling With a Little More Adventure
Dolphins • Reefs • Sandbars • Wildlife
Perfect for guests who don't want to spend the entire trip face-down looking at fish.
Honest Eco Tours
4.9•Boat tour agency•Open
Website•Directions•(305) 294-6306
This one fits the Tipsy Parrot site particularly well. Their small-group eco tours combine dolphin watching, guided snorkeling and sandbars, and their snorkeling guides actually enter the water with guests. Trips can visit sponge reefs, patch reefs and the barrier reef depending on conditions.
Dolphin Safari Charters Key West FL
4.6•Boat tour agency•Open
Website•Directions•(305) 747-0453
Small-group dolphin watching and snorkeling with private-charter options as well. This is a good choice for families or groups that want wildlife, snorkeling and potentially a sandbar rather than a dedicated reef-only trip.
Catamaran Echo - Downtown
4.8•Boat tour agency•Open
Website•Directions•(888) 579-4782
A sailing-oriented option that combines dolphin watching with shallow-water snorkeling. Private charters are available as well, so it works particularly well for families and small groups wanting something more intimate.
🦜 TIPSY SAYS: Dolphins, snorkeling and a sandbar. That's three vacations before lunch.

🦜 TIPSY SAYS: The view gets considerably better once you stop floating on top of it.
⚓ Wreck Diving
Vandenberg • Cayman Salvager • Advanced Diving • Bucket List
This section deserves some visual drama on the website.
The headline attraction is the Vandenberg, intentionally sunk roughly seven miles offshore in 2009. The enormous ship rests in about 140 feet of water and has become one of Key West's signature artificial reefs. The Cayman Salvager and Joe's Tug provide additional wreck-diving opportunities.
Captain's Corner Dive Center

Captain's Corner is a PADI 5-Star Dive Center that's been operating in Key West since 1985. Reef and wreck trips are central to its operation, and the Vandenberg is one of its signature dives.

🦜 TIPSY SAYS: It's a shipwreck. On purpose. And now the fish own it.

🦜 TIPSY SAYS: Never been diving? Everybody underwater had a first dive.
🏝️ Dry Tortugas: The Big Adventure
Remote • Reef • Fort Jefferson • All-Day Adventure
This is the one I'd visually separate from everything else.
Dry Tortugas National Park sits almost 70 miles west of Key West. It combines clear shallow water, reefs, marine life, beaches and Fort Jefferson. The National Park Service maintains a current list of operators permitted to provide diving and snorkeling excursions inside the park.
Finz Dive Center and Tackle Shop
4.9•Dive shop•Open
Website•Directions•(305) 395-0880
This is one of the most interesting options for serious underwater adventurers. Finz runs both scuba and snorkeling trips to Dry Tortugas National Park, including small-group and private experiences. The National Park Service currently lists Finz as a permitted diving/snorkeling operator.
Laid Back Key West
Private charter option for Dry Tortugas trips that can incorporate snorkeling, shipwreck stops and Loggerhead Key depending on the itinerary and conditions. It's also on the National Park Service's permitted diving/snorkeling operator list.
Yankee Freedom III
This isn't a dedicated dive charter, but absolutely belongs on the snorkeling page. The official ferry runs from Key West to Fort Jefferson, and snorkeling equipment is included with the day trip. The shallow snorkeling areas around Fort Jefferson are generally about 5–15 feet deep.
Yankee Freedom Dry Tortugas Ferry
🦜 TIPSY SAYS: Seventy miles from Key West. Apparently we weren't far enough off the rock.
🛥️ Private Snorkeling Charters
Your Boat • Your People • Your Schedule
This is important for Tipsy Parrot guests because a couple, family or group may gladly spend more to avoid a boat carrying dozens of people.
